CO₂ Recovery Technology for Low-Concentration CO₂ Emissions from Coal-Fired (or Gas-Fired) Power Plants, Steel Mills, Cement Plants, and Lime Kilns

Release Date:2023-07-14

Coal- and gas-fired power plants in the power generation sector, steel mills in the steel industry, cement plants and lime kilns in the building materials sector, and the shipping industry are all major sources of carbon dioxide emissions. A common characteristic of the exhaust gases from these facilities is their low CO₂ concentration (8–30%), but they all generate large volumes of exhaust gas. How to control and reduce carbon emissions has become a major constraint on the development of these industries and an urgent issue that needs to be addressed. Coal- and natural gas-fired power plants in the power generation sector, steel mills in the steel industry, cement plants and lime kilns in the building materials sector, and ship engines in the shipping industry are all actively seeking low-energy-consumption, high-efficiency emission reduction solutions.

Addressing the characteristics of these sectors—such as high exhaust gas flow rates, low partial pressure of CO₂ in the exhaust, complex exhaust gas composition, and the presence of acidic gases like SO₂ and NOx—and incorporating design principles focused on high-efficiency, low-energy-consumption, and low-cost carbon capture, Hangzhou Kuai Kai High-Efficiency Energy-Saving New Technology Co., Ltd. has innovatively conducted research to optimize carbon capture processes for low-concentration CO₂ off-gas. Hangzhou Kuikai High-Efficiency Energy-Saving New Technology Co., Ltd. has completed joint research and development with Zhejiang University on a new-generation, low-energy-consumption chemical absorption CO₂ capture pilot platform, as well as the R&D, pilot platform construction, operation, and analysis of CO₂ compression and purification technology for a 200MW oxygen-enriched combustion coal-fired power plant operated by Shenhua Guohua (Beijing) Electric Power Research Institute Co., Ltd. Recently, the company has also undertaken more than ten projects, including a 20kt/a CO₂ capture and recovery project for lime kiln gas in Iran, as well as a demonstration project for the large-scale capture and purification of steel plant flue gas to achieve carbon-neutral recovery.

The low-concentration CO₂ recovery project employs a new generation of low-energy-consumption chemical absorption CO₂ capture technology jointly developed by our company and Zhejiang University. It features high capture efficiency, reliable operation, and cost-effectiveness, providing technical support for large-scale CO₂ emission reductions in coal-fired (and gas-fired) power plants, steel mills, cement plants, and lime kilns. This carbon capture technology offers technical advantages such as advanced technology, operational reliability, and low energy consumption.

Hangzhou Kuai Kai High-Efficiency Energy-Saving New Technology Co., Ltd. has developed energy-saving and emission-reduction strategies, designed technical roadmaps, and manufactured over 30 complete sets of equipment for the recovery and utilization of low-concentration CO₂ vent gas. Consequently, the company provides professional technical services for large-scale CO₂ capture, recovery, and purification/liquefaction projects. To maintain technological innovation and advancement, the company has established collaborative partnerships with multiple universities and research institutions to develop downstream carbon neutrality projects utilizing CO₂.
